Boat Workshop I

This workshop is to reinvigorate the canal as a public space and to facilitate the re-introduction of activities within the canal in Suzhou. In contrast to the vibrant water canal activities of the past, the water canal's activities and the natural habitats are less diverse than before. The locals often fondly remember the heyday of water canal activities, and this project endeavors to find ways to bring back the iconic memory of the water canal activities.

 

This workshop proposes a 1:1 scale boat folding event. The project starts with research on Suzhou canal-related activities and the natural habitats that were before. The boat folding event will create awareness about the lost natural habitats and encourage people to take action. The project will also involve creating a floating sculpture in the Suzhou canal.  The boat is a primary activity in the canal; the workshop participants will build paper boats through folding techniques and exhibit them in public along the canal.
